The Akabira K’engyeya was a famous forest of indigenous trees, which was mostly habitable for the beautiful Colobus monkeys (Engyeya). This used to attract many tourists from near and far who would come to visit the Akabira K’engyeya and watch the Colobus monkeys. Among those who used to visit and tour the Akabira K’engyeya included the famous Ankole Kings (Abagabe ba Ankole), Musicians and historians like Nkamuhayo Rwacumika popularly calling himself Keihura Nkuba also composed the Akabira K’engyeya song, which was mostly used during Emeeza Y’omushana Festivals.

Presently, the forest was cleared, and a trading center after Akabira K’engyeya came up, and business is booming.

OUR STORY

The land that named us

The name Akengyeya comes from Akabira K'engyeya — a famous indigenous forest that once flourished here, home to beautiful Colobus monkeys called Engyeya. Their presence drew tourists, historians and even Ankole kings to this spot.

Right beside the hotel stand the Bachwezi ba igyeraka Rocks, a sacred site where communities have gathered for generations for prayers, blessings and cultural ceremonies. Staying here means you are surrounded by living history.

Today the trading centre that grew up here has become a welcoming destination — and Akengyeya Country Hotel honours that heritage with every stay.
